ABOUT THIS COURSE:

Digital pathology is a disruptive technology in the laboratory workflow. It has tremendous potential to change the way pathologists, researchers, and other personnel interact with pathology data. It is an exciting era of potentially practice changing technology. Although digital pathology comes with significant promises, there are still numerous obstacles that stand in the way of becoming the next standard of care. Aside from clinical practice, digital pathology can be leveraged in the research and education arms of the medical community. This course will cover the nuts and bolts for all related topics in digital pathology for those who are just wondering what all the hype is about, to those who want a little more depth in their understanding of what digital pathology can and will do in the medical community.

In this session, we will explore:

• Brief overview of the basics in digital imaging
• History of digital pathology
• Digital pathology ecosystem
• Whole slide imaging use cases (i.e. clinical, research, and education)
• Challenges and limitation of digital pathology
• How digital pathology can and will change the pathology laboratory
• Image analysis and its application in digital pathology
• The role of digital pathology in machine learning

INSTRUCTOR:

Matthew G. Hanna, MD, Clinical Instructor, Breast and Informatics, Department of Pathology, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Dr. Hanna is a Clinical Instructor at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He had appointments as a Clinical Instructor of Pathology Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and a Pathology Informatics fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr Hanna serves as a junior editor of the Journal of Pathology Informatics. He has strong interests in pathology and clinical informatics, as well as breast pathology. Matthew’s knowledge in digital pathology ranges from experience with all major hardware and software vendors as well as being on the medical advisory board for PathPresenter, an open access pathology platform.
